The seminar "Confronting "death on wheels": road safety in Europe and Middle East" took place in the Ukrainian head office of the World Bank.

The meeting was boarded by the World Bank country manager for Ukraine, Byelorussia and Moldova Martin Reiser. Within the tight circle of the respected participants of the seminar there were the member of the Ukrainian parliament and the head of the parliamentary subcommittee on national security Oleksandr Skybinetsky, the Global road safety partnership country manager for Europe and Central Asia Kathleen Elsig, the president of the Ukrainian road safety association Mykhailo Berlin and the director of the International fund "United world" Oleksandr Iliashenko.

Each of the participans expressed his or her own point of view in accordance with the current situation in the road safety of Ukraine.

Martin Reiser, the World Bank country manager for Ukraine, Byelorussia and Moldova:

- Building quality roads is one task. The second of the same importance is making people obey the rules. Nice and fast roads can leas even to more crashes.

Oleksandr Skybinetsky, the member of the Ukrainian parliament, the head of the parliamentary subcommittee on national security and the chairman of the coordination council of the Ukrainian road safety association:

- Still in Ukraine the political will is not strong enough in the road safety issues. Any changes are possible only within the support of the state legislative and executive bodies. Even if the changes are not very quick, but Ukraine already now must make confident steps in the direction of the improvement of road safety. At the same time, it is neccessary to cultivate the culture of traffic participants behaviour, and first of all - to improve the level of drivers education. For now, most of the work held in trend of road safety is limited to collection of penalties.

Mykhailo Berlin, the president of the Ukrainian road safety association:

- I suppose insurance companies are among the first who are supposed to touch the road safety issue. The socially responsible company "Ukrainian insurance house" is the initiator and the creator of the Ukrainian road safety association. This project is intended to integrate the efforts of state, public, commercial sectors and mass media in order to reduce deaths and injuries on the roads. The Association studies the global experince in the sphere of road safety and tightly cooperates with the key international organisations working in this trend.
